This is the definitive work on the history and development of monetary weight standards. It discusses the evolution of coinage and weight standards throughout the world and convincingly argues that rather than being random and haphazard, many monetary weight standards share common origins. For those researching medals and engravers Forrer is always the first resource to consult. Details about many medallists and engravers in history are scarce, but the tidbits found here can be enlightening. There are a number of more modern or country specific resources, but few are as comprehensive. Finding a link between an engraver and medal or other details listed in this work can unlock a number of other search paths that you may use to find even more information from other sources.

Oka, M. Silver Crowns of the Far East. Tokyo: Taisei Stamps & Coins, 1966. Hardbound. Japanese with some English. 1st Edition.
Focusing on the large size "crown" coins of various nations is a popular method of collecting throughout the world. Coins from asia are generally more difficult for English speaking collectors to study as most books on the subject are in another language. For those seeking additional photos to aid in identification and study of crowns from China, Japan, Russia, Cambodia, and other far eastern nations, as well as British colonial and trade dollars this book, though largely obsoleted by Krause, may provide some useful insights.
Schjoth, Fredrik; Hancock, Virgil. Chinese Currency: The Currency of the Far East. Iola, Wisconsin: Krause Publications, Inc., 1965. Hardbound. English and Chinese. Reprint. This, in combination with the books by Hartill and Kann, is considered by many to be the authoritative work on coins of China. Schjoth was Norway's Consul-General to China. The first edition in 1929 was based upon Schjoth's collection and contains narrative and line drawings of the coins. In 1965 the work was revised and expanded by Virgil Hancock and Hans Schjoth, Fredrik’s son, to include photographs and other improvements. Another reprinting of the original 1929 work in 1976 was produced by Andrew Publishing Company of London with a high quality binding, but without the enhancements found in the 1965 reprint.

In the late 1970s Pierre DeHay, then Director of the Paris mint, organized this multi-volume catalog of all dies currently in inventory. These catalogs could be used to place orders for restrikes of the medals contained therein. As the Paris mint held dies and restruck medals for much of the 19th and 20th century, these catalogs provide insight into which medals likely were or were not restruck (if the dies are not listed herein, they were either removed after the original striking, rusted, or destroyed and thus Paris restrikes of that medal are unlikely).

India
Due to the vast number of different regions, rulers, and coins from India, the number of books and other resources that examine the coins of India is truly immense. No one book captures the coins of all or even most eras. As such, the Krause catalogs as mentioned under World Modern section of this listing are a good place to begin.

The four volume set of books by Gerard van Loon (listed above) comprise the standard reference on medals of the Netherlands for the period 1555 - 1716. About a century later students and faculty at the Royal Academy of Science in the Department of Literature and Fine Arts picked up where van Loon left off. Over several decades they produced ten volumes (listed below) cataloguing medals of the Netherlands circa 1717 - 1806. These volumes likewise continue to be the standard reference for the period of time they cover.

Dasí, Tomás. Estudio de los reales de a ocho, también llamados pesos, dólares, piastras, patacones o duros españoles: Tomo 1-5. Valencia: Tipografía Artística, 1951. Hardbound. Spanish. Limited printing of 500 sets. These five volumes serve as a foundation of understanding of the historical background for Spanish coinage. Includes royal decrees and other contemporary or near contemporary sources of information on coinage of Spain. Any serious student of Spanish coinage must consult Dasí at some point.
de Grau, Gabriel Calbeto. Compendium VIII Reales Volume I & II. San Juan: Ediciones Juan Ponce de Leon, 1970. Hardbound. Spanish and English. Limited printing of 1500 sets. This two volume set provides an overview of 8 reales or “duro” sized coins of Spain and her colonies from the early 1600s to 1970 with photographs to aid identification. Much of the book is printed in both Spanish and English such that a given section will be written in English followed by the Spanish version of that same section. However, there are portions such as the catalog and decrees which are exclusively in Spanish. It contains insights on the mints, fantasy issues, and a substantial number of royal decrees associated with the coinage. The sheer volume of photographs neatly organized and commented with assayers initial, references to other works, and origins of photos combined with the textual information make this a treasure trove for a collector of these coins. Be aware that many offerings of this book include only 1 of the 2 volumes. The book is organized by mint location in alphabetical order so both volumes are necessary. To aid identification, volume 1 has a single star on the front cover and volume 2 has two stars on the front cover. Surpassed in depth and detail only by Dasí for general Spanish issues, by Gilboy for Columnarios, and by O’Connor for issues of Isabel II.

A general description of Spanish coinage for all reigns with images of the coinage types and contextual history. Before Calicó’s Numismática Española this book was a primary resource for identifying Spanish coin types. Still useful for historical information, but largely obsoleted by Dasí. Gilboy, Frank. The Milled Columnarios of Central and South America. Prairie Wind Publishing, 1999. Hardbound. English. 293 pages. Limited Printing of 500. A masterpiece reference work on Spanish American Pillar Coinage of 1732 to 1772. If knowledge is power then this book is a ship of the line with 100 guns. Gilboy explores the history and origins of the famous pillars with worlds and seas design and its implementation on 8 reales and the other denominations. Virtually every detail you could imagine regarding pillar 8, 4, 2, 1, and 1/2 reales is discussed at length in this book. The appendix includes many details of history and operations of the mints, the rulers and officials involved, the methods of manufacture, weights of the coins, and more. This book is essential for anyone interested in the Spanish American Pillar coinage. Unfortunately, only 500 of this book were issued in 1999. Because the information it contains is so essential for collectors this is a rare and hard to find item.

3. The Numismatic Community
3.1 History
3.2 The Market and Major Players
3.3 Regulations
The National Coin & Bullion Association (NCBA), formerly known as Industry Council on Tangible Assets (ICTA), represents dealers and collectors of coins and precious metals with state and federal political and regulatory entities.
This organization has led countless efforts to educate and guide U.S.A. federal and state governments in forming and modifying numismatic and bullion related laws to benefit collectors and industry alike. They have been instrumental in reducing or removing sales tax for coin and bullion sales in many states. An essential organization that serves every member of the numismatic community by protecting the hobby and the industry that makes it possible.
3.4 Industry Realities
Anti-Counterfeiting Educational Foundation (ACEF) <https://acefonline.org> and their Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force form the front line in the fight against fake coins. Comprised of many volunteers and operating entirely on donations, their mission is to mobilize law enforcement resources to protect the integrity of U.S. and world coinage by educating officials on the economic impact and growing threat of counterfeit circulating, collectible, and bullion coins. They are actively engaged with U.S. Customs and other government and law enforcement agencies by providing numismatic experts to authenticate items encountered by those agencies. They have directly contributed to seizure and destruction of many forgeries and the capture and incarceration of numerous individuals importing or selling counterfeits and numismatic forgeries. And you can help! Donate directly or with each purchase you make on amazon and certain qualifying purchases on ebay.
NGC = Numismatic Guaranty Corporation <https://www.ngccoin.com/> is a grading and certification service recognized by collectors and dealers as a first tier preferred third party grader (TPG). They are the only top tier grading service that grades and encapsulates ancient coins. As of this writing, most collectors of world coins and medals prefer NGC holders to PCGS or other TPG holders. The parent company, Certified Collectibles Group, also operates Numismatic Conservation Service (NCS) and Paper Money Guaranty (PMG).
PCGS = Professional Coin Grading Service <https://www.pcgs.com/> is a grading and certification service recognized by collectors and dealers as a first tier preferred TPG. As of this writing most collectors of USA coins prefer PCGS holders to those of other TPGs. The parent company, Collector's Universe, also operates PCGS Banknote and PCGS Restoration.
ANACS and ICG are other TPGs recognized as second tier services by collectors and dealers and some prefer ICG for coins of Canada over all other TPGs.
All other TPGs are considered third tier and are not recognized by the market as grading authorities.
